Scoil Mhuire was delighted to welcome the President of the GAA, Mr. Aogan O Fearghail to our school this week. He was here to promote the upcoming Féile football competition which will be held in Wexford this year. The Féile is an under 14 national football competition held in a different venue each year. The president was accompanied by Wexford hurling star, Conor Macdonald as well as Denis Nolan, Chairman of the ladies football board, Margaret Doyle, County Secretary and Seamus Kennelly. The group were welcomed in to a special assembly where children from 2nd to 6th sang the purple and gold led by Ms. Walsh. Ms.Scully introduced the president whom she had known when she attended teacher training college. The President then spoke to the children about the Féile and the importance of being active outside of school. children from 5th and 6th class the posed questions to Aógan and Conor to which they gave great answers. Following this members of the boys and girls Rackard league teams had their photos taken with the President. A special mention was made of the fact that two of our Staff, Ms. Joyce and Michelle, our secretary were on the first ever girls team to win the Féile. To commemorate the occasion Ryan and Ellie from 4th class presented Aógan with a medal representing a pike. To finish the assembly, Mr. Sheridan led the children in a rousing rendition of 'Dancing at the crossroads' as children got autographs from the president and Conor Macdonald. Before he departed, Aógan signed photos of past Rackard league winning teams. This was a fantastic for Scoil Mhuire and will hopefull encourage more children to play our national games.
