Sports day takes place every June in Scoil Mhuire. During sports day children of all ages are given the opportunity to take part in various activities which form part of the PE curriculum.
The emphasis of sports day is mainly on participation and fair play as well as competition. Each child will receive a certificate at the end of the day for participation.
The Eileen Kennedy Fair play award is given to the child who demonstrates sporting behaviour throughout the day. Eileen Kennedy was a teacher who always encouraged fair play and encouraged participation from each child. Eileen sadly passed away while she was working in Scoil Mhuire and the award is in memory of her.
Each child competes to earn points for their school team during the events. Junior infants up to 3rd class stay in the school while the senior classes go to the local G.A.A pitch. Children take part in individual events such as running, egg and spoon race, long puck and penalty shoot- out. There are also team competitions like relay races, soccer, football and rounders. There is also on obstacle course set out in the school.
On this day we also have a bouncy castle in the school for the children. Also, we have ice cream which is used as a fundraiser for Down Syndrome Ireland. At the end of the day we all gather in the yard. Certificates are handed out and there is a raffle with prizes donated from local sports clubs. The winning team is also announced.
Scoil Mhuire Sports Day is one of the real special days of the year.
