Scoil Mhuire was delighted to welcome the President of the GAA, Mr. Aogan O Fearghail to our school this week. He was here to promote the upcoming Féile football competition which will be held in Wexford this year. The Féile is an under 14 national football competition held in a different venue each year. The president was accompanied by Wexford hurling star, Conor Macdonald as well as Denis Nolan, Chairman of the ladies football board, Margaret Doyle, County Secretary and Seamus Kennelly. The group were welcomed in to a special assembly where children from 2nd to 6th sang the purple and gold led by Ms. Walsh. Ms.Scully introduced the president whom she had known when she attended teacher training college. The President then spoke to the children about the Féile and the importance of being active outside of school. children from 5th and 6th class the posed questions to Aógan and Conor to which they gave great answers. Following this members of the boys and girls Rackard league teams had their photos taken with the President. A special mention was made of the fact that two of our Staff, Ms. Joyce and Michelle, our secretary were on the first ever girls team to win the Féile. To commemorate the occasion Ryan and Ellie from 4th class presented Aógan with a medal representing a pike. To finish the assembly, Mr. Sheridan led the children in a rousing rendition of 'Dancing at the crossroads' as children got autographs from the president and Conor Macdonald. Before he departed, Aógan signed photos of past Rackard league winning teams. This was a fantastic for Scoil Mhuire and will hopefull encourage more children to play our national games.

On Monday April 20th, the boy's 7 a side team took part in a shield blitz in Killurin. They had three games on a perfect day for hurling. The first game was against Boolavougue. The team was in control in this game but some bad shooting kept the scores close throughout. The boys managed to get the killer goals to finish as winners on a scoreline of 2-4 to 2 points. Great performances in this game from Alex Kirby, Cillian Corkery and Jason Kelly. Next up was a real tough game against Barntown. This was a much tougher contest and at half time the scores were level 1-2 a piece. Barntown struck for a goal in the 2nd half and looked to be on their way to victory. However an inspired switch saw Andy "the rocket" Murphy move into the forwards and score 3 goals in quick succession to give Coolcotts the win by 4 points. Christopher did trojan work in this game also. The boys now knew that their destiny was in their own hands and a win over Rathgarouge would give them the shield. The 3rd game started with a flurry of goals from both sides until Coolcotts settled down and took control. They ran out easy winners in the end. Dale Mcgrath was super in the goal with some great puckouts. Jack was outstanding in defence. Ryan, Barry and Jesse made a big difference when coming on. Thier were great scenes at the end as Christopher accepted the trophy on behalf of a fantastic team which showed not just a bit but a load of heart.

On tuesday, 14th of April 8 boys from 6th class took part in a 5  a side tournament in Ferrycarrig park. On the team was Cillian Corkery, Josh Long, Kyle Turner, Christopher Curran, Michael Murphy, Dale Mcgrath, Gianni Forte and Fionn Paige Doyle. The first game was against CBS and the boy were given a tough lesson and beaten 4 nil. However they improved in the next game and beat Kennedy Park B easily 7 - 1. Next up was Kennedy Park A and the boys took a commanding 2 nil lead but eased up with 2 minutes to go and allowed Kennedy park score 2 goals to tie the game. CBS comfortably beat us again before we accounted for Kennedy park B. The final against Kennedy park A saw the boys try very hard but lose two nil. This meant the boys finished 3rd in the group. Well done to all involved.b2ap3_thumbnail_DSCF0526.JPGb2ap3_thumbnail_DSCF0525.JPGb2ap3_thumbnail_DSCF0526.JPGb2ap3_thumbnail_DSCF0527.JPGb2ap3_thumbnail_DSCF0528.JPG

The boy's Mini 7's Hurling team travelled to Killurin on Tuesday the 10th of February to take part in a blitz. Their first game was against Carrowriegh. The team played some fantastic hurling and won on a scoreline of 5-8 to 3 points. Next up was Glynn. This was a very entertaining game. Despite a very poor start the boy, battled back and were unfortunate to lose by the narrowest of margins. Nonetheless the team can hold their heads up high as they showed great spirit and fought until the end. The team was Dale Mcgath, Christopher Curran, Jason Kelly, Andy Murphy, Cillian Corkery, Barry Browne, Dylan Cloney, Jesse Dempsey, Ryan Curran and Alex Kirby.
