Two Teachers who went on to become experts – one- in the field of writing, another- in the field of education.

Eoin Colfer : Writer and Children’s Laureate (joined the staff in 1986)

Eoin first taught Senior Infants which caused him some panic. But alongside him was Irene Lawlor, who encouraged and mentored him - one funny experience they shared was bringing their classes on a memorable trip to Rosslare on the train. All went swimmingly (pardon the pun!) until Eoin had to wade into the water and rescue an over enthusiastic infant!!

Eoin went on to teach a variety of classes in the senior section of the school and shared his passion for English and History with his pupils. Many hilarious shows were written by him as well as the staging of well known musicals such as Oliver and Joseph. On one memorable occasion, he even staged an abridged version of Macbeth with a group of pupils from Sixth class. He also wrote and directed many Easter pageants in Clonard

Eoin’s final production: The Bumblesnouts Save the World!

His other great interest was history, which he combined with art to create some giant scenes from Celtic legends as well as an historical map of Wexford which adorned the PE hall for many years. Liam Turner and John Roche shared this love of local history and together with Pat Goff and some parents and pupils they won the St. Patrick’s Day Parade with a mock battle between the Normans and Vikings in 1990. Eoin’s wit and practical jokes in the staffroom were legendary assisted in no small way by Mr. Turner.!

Eoin took a career break during the early 90’s and spent some time teaching in Tunisia(where he was inspired to write Benny and Omar). When he returned, he taught third class where he was reported to have kept a pet hamster in a cage “an empty tissue box on his desk” and housed a particularly vicious dog in a classroom press!!! His story telling ability was amazingly believable. Eoin’s last position with us was as resource teacher where he also had responsibility for I.T. and the school website. (This current scribe wishes he was still here!) Eoin was out doing yard duty one day when the fateful call came that Artemis Fowl had secured him a valuable contract and the rest, as they say, is history. Now, of course, he has his “Eoin” website!! www.eoincolfer.com

Staff celebrate with Eoin on his success.
