Scoil Mhuire pupils love to sing and are provided with many opportunities to participate in our school choir during the school year.
In September, 5 th and 6 th class pupils are invited to join the ‘Sing Out Loud’ choir which takes place in The National Opera House every year and includes almost 3000 children from Co. Wexford. www.nationaloperahouse.ie/whats-on/show/sing-out-loud2
4 th and 5 th class children form a choir for Confirmation while a choir made up from 3 rd class pupils sing at First Holy Communion.
The Scoil Mhuire Band was set up in 2011. Children have the option to join the band in 5 th class and continue with the band for two years. They are invited to complete an expression of interest at the end of 4 th class.
The band is composed of brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. We also have a Recorder Consort Group.
Music teachers teach both the 5 th and 6 th class band every Friday. The band has many opportunities to perform at various school concerts and assemblies throughout the year and an annual Christmas Carol service in Wexford Town
Breakfast Club is open before school from Monday to Friday. It is a great oportunity, for those students who need it, to get a healthy start to the day.
Boy’s games run all year round for boys from 3rd to 6th class. The purpose is to create opportunities for pupils to get involved in sport and promote a healthy lifestyle. Pupils will also have the chance to represent their school in various competitions.
The main sports that we promote are Gaelic football, Hurling and Soccer. In September, our school team takes part in the Rackard league football competition. This involves pupils from 5th and 6th class. The Rackard league hurling takes place in March involving the same age group. We also take part in mini sevens football and hurling in March. Our 6th class boy’s enter the Fai 5 a-side tournament every April.
Throughout the year we give boys in 3rd and 4th class the chance to take part also, where the emphasis is on fun and participation rather than competition. We also provide information to children regarding local clubs and how they can get involved.
We would encourage each parent to enrol their child in a club as this will further enhance their skills and will in turn help teams in Scoil Mhuire. Each Spring we run a lunchtime league and any parent wishing to get involved should contact the school.
Scoil Mhuire’s Film Club is run in conjunction with Irish Film Institute and Into Film. Every Wednesday a group of film enthusiasts meet in the library after school and watch a DVD that we have ordered from Into Film Service. We try satisfy all interests and watch movies from as many different genres as is possible. After viewing the children submit a blog and the best one is published on our website: www.coolcotts.com
